As a stamp collector, it is important to learn about the history of stamps issued in the region China. With this knowledge it is easier to search for older Chinese postage stamps in a stamp catalogue. This is different for the more modern stamps issued. After all, you often see a date or an easily recognizable image on a stamp.

Postage stamps from China
The first Chinese postage stamps were issued in 1878 during the Qing Dynasty.
Postage Stamps from Hong Kong
Hong Kong’s first postage stamps were issued in 1862 during British colonial rule.
Postage Stamps from Kiautschou
The first stamps of Kiautschou were issued in 1901. These stamps were overprints on German stamps of the “Germania” series, featuring the word “Kiautschou.”

Macau’s first postage stamps were issued in 1884 under Portuguese administration.

The first stamps of Manchukuo were issued in 1932, featuring traditional Chinese designs and motifs.

Tibet began issuing its own stamps in 1912, following the fall of the Qing Dynasty and the establishment of the Republic of China. The first stamps were introduced during a period when Tibet was largely autonomous.
